Business Unit:  Operations
Date:  6 May 2026
Requisition ID:  895

About Snowy:

Snowy Hydro is a dynamic, integrated energy business that has been providing on-demand, reliable energy to Australia for generations. Snowy Hydro owns and operates a powerful combination of generation assets, including the mighty Snowy Mountains Scheme, gas and diesel plants, and contracted wind and solar energy. We also provide electricity and gas to over 1.5 million retail customers through our retail brands Red Energy and Lumo Energy. Snowy 2.0 is Australia's largest committed renewable energy project. This nation-building project will provide on-demand energy and large-scale storage for many generations to come.

About the position:

We are looking for a Mechanical Engineer to join our team in the Murray region. Reporting to the Manager - Plant Engineering, you will play an important role in improving the availability and reliability of our regional assets. This is a balanced position where you will provide essential engineering support to the maintenance function while managing plant risks and driving long-term asset health.

In this role, you will act as an SME serving as the bridge between day to day maintenance and strategic asset management. From leading root cause analysis on complex breakdowns to acting as a technical stakeholder for major capital overhauls, you will ensure our assets operate safely and efficiently within the unique environment of the Snowy Hydro Scheme.

About the location:

This is a 100% site-based role in Khancoban, NSW with a 9-day fortnight roster. To help you and your family settle into the Snowy Mountains, we offer comprehensive relocation support for the successful candidate.

In this role, you will:

  • Lead RCA’s for plant breakdowns, determine corrective actions, and develop operating restrictions to balance plant defects with flexible operation.

  • Develop technical methodologies, Inspection Test Plans (ITPs), and commissioning documentation for complex maintenance work.

  • Monitor plant operation and maintenance outcomes to conduct engineering condition assessments and continually improve maintenance strategies against equipment standards.

  • Initiate and complete engineering for smaller regional projects while representing maintenance interests in large-scale capital projects and design reviews.

  • Coach and mentor the maintenance team, graduates, and students in plant theory and business processes while championing technical standards like change management.

What we’re looking for:

  • A tertiary qualification in Mechanical Engineering or similar discipline.

  • While 5 years of experience in heavy industry (mining, manufacturing, energy, etc.) is preferred, we are happy to consider high-potential graduates who are proactive and ready to learn.

  • Demonstrated fault-finding and diagnostic skills, including proficiency in Root Cause Analysis (RCA) and the ability to interpret complex technical drawings.

  • Solid experience in Asset Management principles and their practical application.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with a proven ability to mentor others and lead technical processes.

  • The ability to adapt quickly and constructively to changing business demands and plant circumstances.
