Senior Project Engineer (Elec)
About Snowy:
Snowy Hydro is a dynamic, integrated energy business that has been providing on-demand, reliable energy to Australia for generations. Snowy Hydro owns and operates a powerful combination of generation assets, including the mighty Snowy Mountains Scheme, gas and diesel plants, and contracted wind and solar energy. We also provide electricity and gas to about 1.5 million retail customers through our retail brands Red Energy and Lumo Energy.
A full-time position exists for a Senior Project Engineer (Electrical) to join the Project Engineering stream.
About the position:
As a Senior Project Electrical Engineer serving in an Owner's Engineer capacity, you will provide strategic technical governance and ownership for major capital projects and complex overhauls. By applying investment logic to critical "rehabilitate versus replacement" decisions, you will ensure that technical solutions provide maximum commercial and operational value to the organisation.
This role is essential for specification writing, scoping and performing masterly technical design reviews for high-impact electrical projects. Beyond your technical contributions, you will act as a primary mentor for the project engineering cohort, leading discipline-specific training and knowledge sharing to build technical capability across the team. Your expertise will ensure all projects comply with technical specifications and regulatory requirements while managing high-risk interfaces for multi-disciplinary engineering teams.
Key Responsibilities:
- Act as the primary technical decision-maker for complex design issues during project execution, ensuring all work complies with engineering standards, technical specifications, and regulatory requirements.
- Lead technical reviews of complex electrical design submissions to ensure long-term reliability and compliance with Snowy Hydro's asset-year lifecycle cost models.
- Apply investment logic to drive critical project delivery decisions, such as determining whether to rehabilitate or replace assets, to maximize commercial and operational value.
- Lead the design management function and manage high-risk interfaces for multi-disciplinary engineering teams for complex projects.
- Provide technical governance on the execution phase of projects by guiding the junior technical members of the project.
- Serve as the commissioning authority for overhaul projects when required, ensuring their safe and logical integration into the energy chain.
- Serve as the primary technical mentor for the project engineering cohort.
- Represent Snowy Hydro (SHL) in external technical forums and knowledge communities.
About the location:
The location for this role is Cooma, NSW, where you'll be part of a dedicated local team delivering key engineering advice to support projects across all of Snowy Hydro’s existing assets.
The role will also involve travel to sites across New South Wales, Victoria, and South Australia as required, providing diverse project exposure and the chance to work in a variety of environments. We offer a flexible hybrid schedule, consisting of a minimum three days in an office - however during certain stages of the project lifecycle you may be expected on site more.
It is a Monday to Friday role, not DIDO (Drive In Drive Out) or FIFO (Fly In Fly Out). We’re not just looking for a new team member; we’re looking to help you make the Snowy Mountains your home. To ensure a smooth transition for the successful candidate and their family, relocation support is available for those interested in a move to Cooma.
About you:
- You hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical or Mechatronics Engineering (or equivalent) and are eligible for Graduate Membership with Engineers Australia; ideally, you also possess a CPEng status, and NER registration.
- You have substantial relevant professional experience, between 8–15 years, in project delivery, covering the full spectrum from design concept to site execution, preferably in hydropower and gas projects. A background in transformers and generator replacements will be highly desirable.
- Preferred background includes hands-on experience with High Voltage (HV) transformers, generators, switchyards, and HV cables, earthing design, as well as Low Voltage (LV) switchgear and protection systems.
- You are a master at maintaining technical standards and reviewing complex designs, ensuring all methodologies are technically compliant while applying investment logic to drive maximum commercial and operational value.
- Your expertise includes specification writing for major electrical equipment.
- You have a demonstrated ability to devise innovative approaches to complex technical challenges and act as the primary technical decision-maker during project execution.
- You possess expert interpersonal and negotiation skills, enabling you to drive consensus among multidisciplinary teams and serve as a primary technical mentor for the project engineering cohort.
- You have a sound knowledge of Quality, WHS, and Environmental standards, ensuring that all projects comply with regulatory requirements and performance criteria.
