About the position:
Are you looking for your next career step within Snowy Hydro? An exciting opportunity has opened for a Project Engineer (Civil) to join the Project Engineering stream. Serving as the Owner's Engineer within the Project Team, you will manage the civil/structural technical workstream, overseeing external design processes to ensure all deliverables are safe, fit-for-purpose, and aligned with SHL’s long-term lifecycle models.
Key Responsibilities:
- Act as the technical owner for civil/structural design packages (foundations, dams, hydraulic structures, penstocks, and concrete/steel infrastructure), ensuring safety, reliability, and maintainability.
- Perform and check simple to complex calculations and verify contractor submissions with minimal to none detailed supervision.
- Own the civil technical baseline for simple projects and author Scopes of Work/Service to drive procurement.
- Act as the first point of resolution for technical conflicts and non-conformances, escalating strategic issues to Senior or Principal Engineers.
- Provide field engineering and technical guidance during commissioning and Site Acceptance Tests (SAT).
- Supervise site contractors and provide on-the-job coaching and peer reviews to Graduate Project Engineers.
About the location:
Based in Cooma, this hybrid role (minimum 3 days in-office) joins a dedicated local engineering team supporting Snowy Hydro's assets. Occasional travel across regional sites will be required.
About you:
- Bachelor's Degree in Civil/Structural Engineering or equivalent tertiary diploma combined with relevant industry experience (eligible for Membership of Engineers Australia).
- 2–8 years of professional engineering experience within power generation, heavy civil infrastructure, or utilities.
- Average knowledge of structural, geotechnical, and hydraulic fundamentals, with the ability to manage technical risks (e.g., slope instability, foundation hazards).
- Thorough working knowledge of relevant Australian Standards (AS 1170, 3600, 4100, 5100), the NCC, and dam safety guidelines.
- Strong design management, contractor supervision, and stakeholder negotiation skills, with experience participating in Safety in Design (SiD), HAZID, and HAZOP sessions.
